What’s happening to copper lines in Southern Indiana

AT&T has said it is working to exit its legacy copper network across the large majority of its wireline footprint by the end of 2029. It’s doing this in stages, area by area, and Southern Indiana is already part of the process.

  • Galena exchange, Floyd County. The FCC has authorized AT&T to stop providing traditional landline service in parts of the Galena exchange on or after June 30, 2026. That date has passed, so shut-offs there can already be happening.
  • New Washington exchange, Clark County. Parts of the New Washington exchange are authorized for shut-off on or after November 15, 2026.
  • New Albany, Jeffersonville, Clarksville, Sellersburg and Charlestown. These towns aren’t on AT&T’s published shut-off lists yet, but that can change with each new filing.
  • Indiana law lets AT&T step back. Since 2014, Indiana law has let AT&T drop its carrier-of-last-resort duty in any part of its territory by notifying the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC). AT&T still needs FCC approval before it shuts off service.

Bottom line: AT&T notifies affected customers by mail, so a letter about your phone service is your cue to plan ahead. Don’t wait for the shut-off date. Moving early gives you time to keep your numbers, test your fax and alarm lines, and switch over on your schedule.

The lines businesses forget about

Most businesses moved their main phones years ago. The copper that’s left tends to be the quiet lines nobody thinks about until they stop working:

  • Main and back-office lines. Older lines still ringing at a front desk, warehouse or back office.
  • Fax lines. Medical, legal, insurance and government paperwork. See business fax options
  • Alarm and security panels. Burglar alarm dialers that report to a monitoring center.
  • Fire alarm panels. Life-safety lines with code requirements.
  • Elevator emergency phones. The phone in every cab.
