AT&T has said it is working to exit its legacy copper network across the large majority of its wireline footprint by the end of 2029. It’s doing this in stages, area by area, and Southern Indiana is already part of the process.
Bottom line: AT&T notifies affected customers by mail, so a letter about your phone service is your cue to plan ahead. Don’t wait for the shut-off date. Moving early gives you time to keep your numbers, test your fax and alarm lines, and switch over on your schedule.
Most businesses moved their main phones years ago. The copper that’s left tends to be the quiet lines nobody thinks about until they stop working:
Not sure what’s still on copper? Call (502) 430-1234 for a free line review and we’ll find out.
1. Start with a free 14-day trial. We provide free loaner phones so you can try the service before you commit.
2. Find every line. We go through your phone bill and your building and list every copper line, what it’s connected to and who monitors it.
3. The right replacement for each line. Main lines and staff phones move to our cloud phone system. Fax lines get your choice of cloud fax, fax-to-email, or an adapter that keeps your existing fax machine working. Alarm and elevator lines move to a battery-backed device, and we coordinate with your alarm company on fire panels. More on alarm and elevator lines

Is AT&T shutting off copper phone lines in Southern Indiana?
Yes, in stages. The FCC has authorized shut-offs in parts of the Galena exchange in Floyd County on or after June 30, 2026, and in parts of the New Washington exchange in Clark County on or after November 15, 2026. AT&T has said it is working to exit copper across most of its footprint by the end of 2029.
My business is in New Albany or Jeffersonville. Am I affected?
Not yet, based on AT&T’s published lists. New Albany, Jeffersonville, Clarksville, Sellersburg and Charlestown aren’t on them, but later filings could add them. AT&T notifies affected customers by mail.
Can I keep my phone numbers?
Yes. You keep your existing numbers when you switch to Louisville Telecom.
What about my alarm, fire panel and elevator lines?
Alarm and elevator lines move to a battery-backed device. Fire panels have code requirements, so we coordinate with your alarm company on those.
How do I find out which of my lines are copper?
