What AT&T copper retirement means for your business

AT&T has said it is working to exit its legacy copper network across the large majority of its wireline footprint by the end of 2029. It’s doing this in stages, area by area, and Louisville is already part of the process.

  • Louisville copper lines are “grandfathered.” AT&T’s Discontinued Legacy Service Log shows that, effective October 15, 2025, traditional business and residential phone lines (plus services like ISDN PRI, Centrex and remote call forwarding) are grandfathered in mapped areas of all 16 Louisville wire centers, including Jeffersontown, St. Matthews, Okolona, Shively, Westport Road, Armory Place and Third Street. Grandfathered means AT&T won’t accept new lines, moves, adds, changes or contract renewals. Your existing lines keep working for now, but you can’t add a line or move one to a new suite.
  • Shut-off dates are set area by area. The FCC has already cleared AT&T to discontinue traditional phone lines in parts of more than 100 Kentucky wire centers. On August 25, 2025, it approved shut-offs on or after June 30, 2026 in parts of 62 Kentucky wire centers, including nearby Bagdad, Finchville, Lebanon Junction, Pleasureville, Bloomfield, Chaplin, Campbellsburg, Milton, Carrollton and Ghent. That date has now passed, so shut-offs in those 62 areas can already be happening. On January 12, 2026, it approved shut-offs on or after November 15, 2026 in parts of 43 more, including Eminence, Waddy, West Point and Mount Eden. As of this writing, AT&T hasn’t been approved for a shut-off date in the Louisville metro wire centers. When one is set, affected customers get a written notice.
  • Kentucky law doesn’t require AT&T to keep copper in Louisville. Under a 2015 state law (HB 152), the Kentucky Public Service Commission can no longer regulate whether AT&T offers traditional landline service in larger exchanges like Louisville. That leaves the timing to AT&T and the FCC.

Bottom line: no one should tell you your line dies on a specific date unless AT&T has sent you that date. But copper isn’t coming back, and grandfathered lines are harder and slower to fix. Plan the move now, while you set the schedule.

The lines businesses forget about

Most businesses moved their main phones years ago. The copper that’s left tends to be the quiet lines nobody thinks about until they stop working:

  • Main and back-office lines. Older lines still ringing at a front desk, warehouse or back office.
  • Fax lines. Medical, legal, insurance and government paperwork. See business fax options
  • Alarm and security panels. Burglar alarm dialers that report to a monitoring center.
  • Fire alarm panels. Life-safety lines with code requirements.
  • Elevator emergency phones. The phone in every cab.
  • Gate, door and access-control phones. Call boxes and entry systems.
  • Credit card terminals, modems and other dial-up equipment.

How we move you off copper

1. Start with a free 14-day trial. No credit card required. Try our service with free loaner desk or handheld phones before you commit. Setup is free.

2. Find every line. We go through your phone bill and your building and list every copper line, what it’s connected to and who monitors it.

3. The right replacement for each line. Main lines and staff phones move to our hosted VoIP / cloud PBX. Fax lines get your choice of cloud fax, fax-to-email, or an adapter that keeps your existing fax machine working. Alarm and elevator lines are handled by our own team from start to finish. We plan and replace these lines with our own team, and coordinate with your alarm company on fire panels. See alarm & elevator line replacement.

4. Keep your numbers. You keep your existing phone numbers. Porting generally takes about 10 business days, and if you’re up against a deadline, we can escalate it.

5. Network and wiring. Our engineers set up the network the new service runs on, including VLANs and switches. The Mister Wireless install team handles any new telecom wiring.

6. Cut-over and training. A project manager schedules the switch so you’re not caught short, and we train every user on the new phones.

7. Local support after. Questions go to our Louisville team at (502) 430-1234.

POTS replacement FAQs

What is a POTS line?

POTS stands for “plain old telephone service,” the traditional analog phone line that runs over copper wire. Many businesses still have a few for fax machines, alarm panels, elevators or a backup main line.

Is AT&T shutting off copper phone lines in Louisville?

AT&T is retiring copper in stages. In mapped areas of the Louisville wire centers, traditional business lines are grandfathered. That means no new lines, moves or changes, though existing lines keep working. As of this writing, AT&T hasn’t published a shut-off date for the Louisville metro wire centers, but the FCC has already approved shut-offs in parts of more than 100 other Kentucky wire centers, with dates of June 30, 2026 (already passed, so shut-offs there can already be happening) and November 15, 2026. AT&T has said it aims to exit copper across the large majority of its network by the end of 2029.

How will I know if my lines are affected?

AT&T sends notices to affected customers. If you’ve received a letter, send us a copy and we’ll explain what it means for your building. If you haven’t, a free line review will show you which lines are copper and what they’re tied to.

Can my fire alarm or elevator line just move to VoIP?

Not always. Fire alarm and elevator phone lines have code and monitoring requirements, and a standard internet phone line may not meet them. That’s why we plan those lines separately. We plan and replace these lines with our own team, and coordinate with your alarm company on fire panels.

Can I keep my phone numbers?

Yes. You always keep your existing phone numbers. Porting generally takes about 10 business days, and we can escalate it if you’re up against a deadline.

What about my fax machine?

You have three options: cloud fax, fax-to-email, or an adapter that keeps your existing fax machine working. Any of them gets your documents through without a copper line.

Do I need new wiring or equipment?

Sometimes. Our engineers check your network, and the Mister Wireless install team runs any new telecom wiring. You can use free loaner desk or handheld phones, and setup is free.

Can I try it before I switch?

Yes. Start a free 14-day trial (no credit card required) with free loaner phones and free setup, and see how it works for your business first.

What does it cost?

It depends on how many lines you have and what each one does. The trial, loaner phones and setup are free, and you’ll get a written quote before anything changes. Seats start at $19.99 (rack rate), with volume discounts available. Call (502) 430-1234 for a quote.

How long does the switch take?

Number porting generally takes about 10 business days, and we can escalate it if you’re up against a deadline. Your project manager gives you a full schedule up front.

What if AT&T already sent me a shut-off date?

Call us right away at (502) 430-1234 and have the letter handy. We’ll start with your life-safety lines and escalate porting if needed.
